Description:  This class is similar to the 3-6 class but with more age-appropriate activities. What is STEM Club?  STEM Club focuses on motivating students' interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through the use of the scientific method, students are launched into discovery. The program offers an opportunity to get excited about the world of Engineering and Mathematics with hands-on projects.

1-2 Kids in the Kitchen - MEETS ONCE A MONTH ON WEDNESDAY

Description:  This hands-on class will introduce the youngest chefs to basic cooking skills.   Students will learn how to use basic, age-appropriate kitchen equipment and learn skills such as mixing, measuring and even some baking! Incorporated into the hands-on class, students will be introduced to basic nutrition facts and learn how to make healthy choices in the kitchen!!
Maximum:  10 Students
Supply Fee:  $25 per student per year

1-2 Visual "Artz"
Teacher:  Mary Johnson
Description: Every class is filled with age-appropriate hands-on activities that broaden art knowledge. Students discover that each artist has a unique and distinctive style including-themselves!  We believe it is important to introduce students to many different mediums and various techniques so they have the skills needed to express their creativity. This course covers a wide variety of projects including acrylic, tempera and watercolor painting, clay sculpting, graphite, colored pencil and oil and chalk pastel drawing, multimedia collaging and a few surprises! We also study and recreate famous works of art. 
Join us for a year filled with art activities, projects, and fun! The Supply/Copy fee covers all art materials for each class.  Grades are based on classroom attendance and participation.  This course does not regularly utilize Igrade.

1-2 Language Arts 
Teacher: Brooke Miller
Description: This class will introduce young learners to the wonderful world of language arts. Students will enjoy exploring a variety of literary elements with class read alouds of fairy tales, biographies, mysteries and poems. Students will interact through literature games and collaborative activities to further comprehension, deepen understanding of genres and encourage creativity. Students will also practice spelling and use of phonetically sorted, high-frequency words through weekly sound/word activities. They will explore the rules and structure of our language, including recognizing sentences, telling and asking sentences, capitalizing proper nouns, nouns, verbs, pronouns, contractions, compound words, using I, me, we, us, they, them correctly, and more. In addition, students will investigate main ideas and supporting details. By the end of the year, students will have the tools to write short paragraphs. Also, monthly sharing of book reviews will motivate students to read a variety of books at home as they hear the recommendations from each other. We will work together to reach our goal of reading 100 books and celebrate with an ice cream party!
Text: Grammar & Punctuation, Grade 2, Books:  Each month students will select a book of their choice and reading level to read at home and then share with the class in our monthly book reviews.  Various picture books and poems will be provided by the teacher for enjoyment in class.

1- 2 Science

We are going to start with “What is a Scientist?” That’s a huge question with a  variety of answers.  We are going to learn about several types of science and explore several topics in science.  All reading will be done at home, leaving class time to be used to discuss and explore each topic in a hands-on way to deepen their understanding and increase their curiosity.  
Some topics will have books, others will have hand-outs for reading at home.

1-2 Social Studies 
Teacher:  Kristin Brown
Description: We will use BJU Heritage Studies to begin to look at American culture in colonial times from the early settlers to the American Revolution. We will and discuss and have hands-on learning about life during this time farming, shopkeeping, and clothing. We will also learn what was happening with kings and queens in Europe at the time. World Geography, mapping skills, important Americans of this time frame will all be discussed during the year. Most reading will be completed at home, while discussion, activities and games will be done during class time to complement and enhance your study at home.  We will be hands-on in class, by doing graphs, charts, games and projects.  At home, you will do reading & questions, as well as possible projects as well!  We will also explore the election process and will be “voting” on our class mascot!

1st -4th Grade Enrichment    
Teacher:  Joy Moody
Description:  Enrichment uses engaging children's literature to reinforce math, language, and geography concepts.  This class is extremely hands-on.  We cut, draw, paint, glue and solve puzzles/problems.  This class will remain for grades 1-4.  If there is a high enrollment, the class will be divided into grade levels 1-2 and 3-4 so we can further specialize learning.  Be ready for ALL NEW stories and activities taken from Five in a Row, Volume 2.
